This is the first time I disagree with you. When you pay tax, either you pay as an individual or jointly depending on your condition. Govt tax you less if you have dependents and more if you are single. Even if you have single person earning in the family but if you have multiple dependents, you are eligible for tax discounts (or in this case tax rebate check). There is no question of H4 comes here as long as you have one member in the family earning and you are his/her dependent.
What if you have an american with 6-7 dependent kids? Would you say that you do not want to subsidize him since he has so many non-earning members in his family. Same goes with an american women who wants to take care of her kids instead of going to work. How does that make it different from H4.
I'm not sure what were you thinking when wrote that post.
my last post on the subject was :
ok can u guys stop giving me red dots....i havent posted on this thread since the 31st of last month. I was hoping it was buried but somehow it came back up.
my reasoning was this. there is no such thing as a free lunch...any rebates we get this year will have to be balanced out in our tax returns for the year 2008. that means higher taxes for people who pay taxes.
but it looks like no body wants to think about that or deal with that..therefor i officially take a step back from my previous position..hope all ur spouses and children and parents and other dependents all get a rebate.
plus i think i got some major bad karma by posting my views on this thread..i ended up with a scratched cornea when i woke up on the 1st. It was one of the most painful experience in my life...so please ...i eat crow...let everyone get rebates...please stop giving me a bad reputation and really offensive comments.

I see 12 full pages in less than two days with over 160 posts. Can somebody please explain in two or three simple sentances about whats going on and what is all this about?
I have done all the readings about border fence act, SKIL bill, S2611. But I still can figure out whats going on here in this thread.
Thanks guys
pls read

to know what this is about. : "slight glimmer of hope that some of our provision may get included in some bill." In order to achieve that we need lot of support and funding to make things happen in DC. This is the plan before the year ends.

or if there are any Gujrati Bhai bens in the forum, could you contact them for any kind of support or even a letter of support for our cause.
This will help IV convey to lawmakers the list of organizations that support us. The gujratis are in great numbers in america and will certainly help us.

He is charging $185 including physical exam and test and xrary.
You don't need to book an appointment, just walk in.
Dr. Anthony D. Blau at 305 Broadway, 4th Floor, New York, NY 10007. Tel.: (212) 766-4433. The medical exam at his office costs $185.
All the vaccination has been done on that day. They will ask you to come back after two days. Need 48 hrs to test the Skin/TB test. If you don't get appointment in other places. Try this walkin option. It's reliable. Good service.
one more thing if u r positive for TB test then will recommend for xray.which is included in the same price. No extra charge
best regards

yabadaba, I guess instead of showing your knowledge of immigration laws, you can show some common sense. I am not asking for ways a H4 can get SSN. For statement did not make any sense to me because that tried to discriminate between H4 with SSN and H4 without SSN. If H4 with SSN gets tax rebate but not H4 without SSN, how is that fair using any logic?
Are u sure u r a highly skilled immigrant?
a person on h4 can have a ssn (Social Security Number) under the following conditions
1. EAD holder (that means I-485 was filed)
2. Previous H1 (working) now H4 (not working)
3. Previous F1 (student) undergrad or grad -> used cpt or opt to work -> now H4 holder
4. Previous L2 now H4 (L2s can get EAD, thereby SSN)
That basically leaves people whose spouses came directly on H4 in the last few months and/or people who did not apply for 485 in july.

I was reading on the senate on the lame duck session. Why exactly is it called that?
In this session will the members who recently won sit in or wil the people who were previously in power get to sit and decide stuff?
Just wondering how good or "lame duck" this session really is going to be?

I am talking practical. I agree india is growing and there are good stuffs. I am not against India or any other country. I am weighing like others what makes a better place for ones career and family considering both pros and cons. Yes you have to forego a lot from homecountry living in US, but you still stay here which means you have lot more pros than cons. Those differs from individual to individual.
Your spouse is on H1 and you are also. You both make some decent money and live comfortable life which is good. You talk everything positive about India and still you live here. So you think this is better place than India as OF TODAY. In hypothetical conditions, if Srilanka offers 1000% more opportunities than US, then everyone will jump in there. AS OF TODAY, US is better than India and that is why you are here.
The decision of moving back changes with time for everyone. Eventhough two people in the same company in US, do the same job, earn similar salary, with similar family situation but one with two 5+aged kids will differ when comes to moving back. I dont want to argue just for the heck of it. I want more practical approcah on this. I love india and I also feel it is growing. But I still consider US is better than India for my career.
Once you live here for a while in US having a mindset of going back, most of the people end up with debts more than 20K(minimum). You think to clear those debts before you want to go back, but unfortunately you end up in more debts. Tell me one day you went back. I agree I am wrong on that day. Until then, I beleive people stay in US because THEY WANT to stay in US. Eveyone claim India is growing bla bla bla, but no one wants to move. Instead they want their spouse to work here and earn more and buy house etc etc. Dont forget you are part of IV and you are so because you want something on immigration. I dont want to hear that you want to move after 10 years. Tell me today that you want to move. What is the guarantee that 10years down the line, you will not say something else when 5 years back you felt US is better than India and now viceversa.
If you compare life in the US vs. India in terms of material comfort, then obviously US is more attractive. However, keep in mind that India has changed a lot since most of us came to the US 5-10 yrs ago. Its quite possible to lead a good life in India if one has the money, and there are plenty of good jobs in India that give you money.
Sure, there is a lot more competition in India and many people are scared of that competition. Its far easier to get a decent paying job in the US, than it is in India.
Your generalization is incorrect that most of us would not be talking about relocating to India if it was not for the retrogression. I had come here with a 10 yr plan (hoping that I would get my citizenship in 10 yrs and the decision to go back would have been much more straightforward). I would still like to stick to my initial plan. I know of a lot many friends who have either gone back after 6yrs of H1B or are in the process of going back.
So lets not confuse the issue by debating about which country is better to live in. I think going back is a matter of personal choice and what you value more - the material comforts that the US offers or the option to be close to the family & your kids to grow up in the Indian culture.

I'll offer 2 other perspectives to look at this
say you did not contribute or did not even vote for the politician who represents your district....do you still demand accountability? why? cause that politician is representing you... whether you like it or not
IV represents a common cause whether the GC seekers like it or not so it should not surprise you when they ask for accountability
- I ask accountability because I pay the tax and its my money.
As a second perspective
Say you are an investor and a hedge fun manager comes to you with a great investment in a company. Do you blindly trust what the hedge fund manager does with your money or do you want details about the investment and the company?
Nothing wrong with seeking information about the organization you want to invest in
Rather than being mad/frustrated you should be happy about a prospective interested investor!!
- You can ask the question how your money is going to be invested and whats the expected return
- You can not ask what they did with money they charged the previoud investor.
Most importantly you can ask this questions if you are a potential investor. Not just for time pass or to find execuse.
OK. Lets stop this discussion and if you believe you can convince people, please go ahead and do that. Would be happy to join with you.
take care.

Wow!..
At the moment, high-skilled workers are prevented from emigrating to
the Unites States due to restrictive caps on their entry. In order to accomplish this goal, a green card will be immediately available to foreign students with an advanced degree from a United States institution of higher education in a field of science, technology, engineering, or
mathematics, and who possess an offer of employment from a United States employer in a field related to their degree

If demand and supply is overly unbalanced like fewer graduates and more jobs in the short term the graduates might get higher salaries but in the long run it will adversely affect the industry. An example would be the medical tourism. The health care industry costs, especially the cost of the doctors and hospitalization is so high that people are willing to go to countries like India to get there surgeries for quarter of the cost. My point is if people are willing to take a chance on as big an issue as medical needs by going outside the country to cut costs why would they not move jobs overseas. If engineering and science job salaries go up too high either the jobs will dry up completely or they will move them overseas. Yes jobs are being outsourced even now with 85k H1 issued per year, but imagine the number of jobs outsourced if there are no H1 at all. The number of outsourced jobs would be more than now.
Yes, the market determines the price. But , do you remember the very #1 rule in market and ecconomics: Supply and Demand !
The more you supply, the less is the price. That's how those good majors maintains the salary level by controlling the number of graduates. If IT industry is like this, control the graduates and set higher standards for people to be in this area, I bet CS workers will be paid much better, and we will have much better software and service.

Does any one know how many people are stuck in the backlog centers only on EB categories?
page 35 of the ombudsman's report:
Additionally, DOLs recent backlog elimination efforts, scheduled to be completed
by September 30, 2007, are predicted to add 70,000 or more approved labor certifications
yielding as many as 170,000 additional green card applications.

shrayus,
Though, wouldn't you agree that the opporuntity to get promoted to a higher position/job title is greater for you in your home country than in US?
:p Hi Friends,
Working conditions are always somewhat hostile no matter which country you are working. I was working in India in a pretty good company but I was experiencing red tapism, nepotism and all the standard problems of a job culture of India. Here in America, we have only one "Seemingly very horrible" problem of immigration problem. But the good part is, it is common to a lot of people ! So why not to fight for it through a common plateform like this one !
I think that is also one rational solution among others.

The quick succession of developments last week due to Frist's new bill and other things may have prompted many of employment based immigrants to start opening the champagne bottle a little too soon. Many of them do not know that hard cap on countries is going to make retrogression worse.
Before we educate lawmakers, its even more important that we get all our friends and colleagues on board and educate THEM that either bill(Specter or Frist) that is passed as-is will worsen the situation for EB 1, 2, and 3 and not improve it if they are from India and China. The reason we say this is we need much more than 1100 members and 30 volunteers to work on this cause. (By "members" I mean those who registered here, by "volunteers" I mean those who sent their names and number and zipcodes to me or Nagaraj to sign up for local grassroots volunteering).
If we cannot convince our own friends who are victims like us to join as a member or volunteer or contribute money, how do you think the congress member is going to be convinced by us? Of course both have to be done in parallel but what I am trying to say is that if we dont take the ownership of general apathy in desi community(We are one of the same community) then we will own the resultant problems of that apathy. Time to dust off the address book and check on a few friends if they are now willing to wake up and rise. 1100 members is not good enough. If you need help in making your case, email me at jay@immigrationvoice.org or email Nagaraj at nagaraj@immigrationvoice.org and we will be more than happy to help you.

I know of lot of people who got their GC approved in August last year but was dated July.
So the window of oppertunity is not just August. Even if the dates retrogress, there may be chances for approvals in September with a August date.
I hate this wait. I wish they could approve now for a August start date :D
When a visa # is given to your I485 petition rest is assured. Card itself may take few days to few weeks (they say within 60 days). If they intend to assign all available/unused visa #s, hopefully by oct end every approval will have card in hand.Good luck everyone current as per 08VB.
