A WEEK iPhone battery life? Even if you cripple the phone by disabling features, there's still no way it would last even close to a week unless it's in sleep mode the entire time
Sure it can, as long as you don't make or receive any calls, play games, stream music, or surf the web.

I'm on UQ Wimax with an NEC A t e r m W M 3 5 0 0 R router. It's a POS really, I keep losing my wifi connection when I have my laptop AND my Android phone(s) connected. But it's so inconsistent, sometimes hours go by before I get an issue, sometimes it happens within minutes.
I only keep it cuz it's fairly stable with just my MBA connected, and because of the amazing 8 hours of battery.
This was plan with no contract, and flat fee for unlimited (actually really unlimited, this is Japan!) data. 4490/month. With contract is 500 cheaper or something, maybe 1000. Can't remember. Device itself was 5100, and activation was another 2-3000.
Patrix.
Thanks for the info, I need to find a good reasonable price on an iPad sim card (the AT&T international rates are a joke)!
We have a bunch of free wifi hot spots on the bases so my laptops are fine with those but the iOS devices don't play well with them and the ISP doens't really seem to care to want to fix that connectivity...

Whilst the overall suite is much better than the 2008 version I have to say the performance of Excel on the Mac is just extremely poor when copying chunks of rows to another sheet it's just painful.
Only talking maybe 10,000 rows and it borks - having used Excel on Windows for many years, including the latest versions capable of handling million row spreadsheets, the performance overall of the Mac version is crap.
Very near to being a great suite but I wonder if they have the inclination to resolve and improve.....

Xserve lags so far behind the Mac Pro in release, costs much more, has little to make it better and just as much to make it worse. I would love to have an Xserve, but I don't understand why anyone would buy one.
Do a little research and you will find this is a incredibly well engineered server. I have read a couple reviews and it looks like it will be a big hit with IT pros. That may not be easily understood, or appreciated by others.

It's January 1st, 2011 on the east coast, so it's time for a new monthly desktop thread!
As per before, ground rules apply.
Monthly Desktops Guidelines:
• For large images use [timg] rather than
• Use attachments when necessary so images don't disappear when they are removed from their source
• When possible, include links to the full-sized original so others can download them. If you don't want to share, state that in your posts so others don't continue to ask for links.
• When quoting a post with images, remove the images to reduce clutter
• Please report any posts you feel need attention by clicking on this icon: .
• If you would like an original wallpaper I would recommend using TinEye
Previous Iterations: December (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1057691) - November (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1041375) - October (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1023594) - September (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1005154&highlight=september+desktops)
Happy new year to all.

I want to be able to work easily between Windows and Mac file systems easily, read, write and all that, between wireless networks anyway.
For this last, there is currently a simple solution called NTFS-3G; it allows read/write capabilities between your Mac and any NTFS file system.
I understand the vendor now charges for the product but the last free version is still available for download from various sites.

Not even sure how much benefit the second core confers in an application like office anyway.
The 2nd core makes a huge difference to Rosetta, let me tell you. As someone trying to run Office on a Core Solo mini the difference between it and a Core Duo MacBook 1.83Ghz is like light and day.
Time to upgrade my mini to Core 2 Duo I think! :)

I'm not a thrifty person by nature, so it says plenty that I refuse to pay the prices they're asking for these mags on the iPad. It really is that simple. Make them $1.99 and sales will go through the roof.
Yea, the value for the price is not there. You can get the paper version of Wired for $10/yr via Amazon. Why would you pay the crazy prices for the digital version, if anything it should be even cheaper.
It's not Conde Nast being smarter its Conde Nast not knowing how to execute a digital strategy that works.

I've written a massive list of Mac OS X 10.7 predictions, things that probably won't be included but I wish they were, and some things that will never happen (Blu-Ray and friends). Please check it out on my website- http://www.split-screen.net/features/mac-os-x-107-lion-wishful-thinking.
Please do, though. I am a human and not a robot.

The 60 foot range limitation doesn't make this exploit pointless, as many in this thread have implied. The technology allows tracking of people who are known to pass certain points, like the doorway of a building or along a certain jogging path. Since the tracking can be automatic, the "spy" doesn't have to be personally within 60 feet of the "victim". Instead, the victim need only pass within 60 feet of any of the surveillance sensors the spy has planted.
So it's reasonable to make the point that this technique wouldn't be worth the trouble because other methods of tracking people are at least as effective and have larger ranges, but it's less reasonable to say that Nike tracking is of no concern because people can see other people when they are 60 feet away.
It's not really an 'exploit' per say, the device is doing exactly what it's supposed to be doing. It's not even a particularly original problem since RFID chips have been around for a few years and are much smaller, cheaper, and can do the exact same thing.
The story is sensationalism at best in my view, using the popularity of the iPod and Nike+ device as a way to scare people.
