    Came across this article today.

    http://www.anandtech.com/show/4275/apple-now-using-samsung-ssds-in-macbook-air

There's a big difference in both read and write speeds.

If you look closely, Anandtech refers to a MacRumors thread that we started here 2 months ago. That said, the Samsung drive does appear to be a nice silent upgrade for those lucky enough to get it.

I picked up an older APC 1500 XS with an external 47lb. APC XS/RS battery pack for $20 as-is from a surplus place ($1500+ retail). I let the unit charge overnight and with a PC pulling 200W and my screens, speakers, modem and airport extreme pulling less than another 100W I could get 120 min of backup power! I knew though, it wouldn't be in surplus if it was working like it should.

Under a 700W load the UPS would fail it's self-test, but at my barebones (387W) it passed just fine even with batteries last replaced in 2005 according to the powerchute software. Everytime the UPS went onto battery, I would hear a constant electrical noise/hum, I thought it was the UPS inverters. I then tried to do the real test - unplug the UPS and see how long the batteries really last under a 387W load. The 6 12V batteries lost 10% every few seconds; batteries are dead. Near the end of the test I bent down and I could hear that the Jacob's Ladder arcing sound/hum was coming from my PC's power supply not the UPS!

So yesterday 2 9Ah 12V batteries (Tempest) replacement batteries arrived. I installed them and removed the dead external APC battery pack. Now the estimated time is about 25 min, but it will actually last that long. I thought new batteries would have solved the problem. I have an APC 350 between my APC 1500 and my PC, every time I switch to battery power the 350 kicks in and my PC sounds fine for the brief time it's on. Here are my Kill-a-Watt readings:
AC Utility Power: 120-121V, Power Factor: .97-.98
Battery Power: 116V, Power Factor: .79

Here is the sound:http://www.filedropper.com/powersupply It actually sounds more like a large hair trimmer...

From my research, I found that PSUs don't like the square or sine-wave the older APC's put out, and the noise is the PSU's Power Factor correction? Especially if I can expand this UPS unit, I want to make sure it's not doing harm to the devices connected!

    Thanks for the help guys!

    I blush, and thanks.

Just make sure that you let us know what it is you do end up with!

A Mini is also not a bad idea.

    1) Get a refurbished one to save some bucks. Max out the RAM yourself - save bucks over Apple doing it.
    2) Add FW external HDDs for storage. They can be used on a Mac Pro or an iMac later on.
    3) With the money saved on the Mini, you can get a high quality monitor. Also transferable to a Mac Pro or an iMac later (as a 2nd monitor). A good monitor can used for several to many years comfortably. Imho, it's better to produce better photos (because the monitor is accurate) and wait some extra seconds, than to get a faster computer but put out photos with inaccurate colour.
    4) Start investing in the SW tools that you will want/need. These are also transferable to a new system.
    5) When you finally spring for a fully loaded, 24 core, 512MB RAM, 72 TB Storage, 4 graphic cards, 4 Thunderbolt ports iMac Pro Supreme Tower all of the peripherals and software moves too.

It's how I got started. A small Mini with a 23" ACD. Everything I bought to go with it also had to work with a (future) Mac Pro. Eventually I was working with Photoshop files that were approaching 1GB, on a Mini with only 1GB of memory (the days when opening a Mini involved spludging).

There was a lot of HDD thrashing. I was afraid that PS would crash, so I saved often. It took so long to save a big file, that I could go out and mow the lawn or do the dishes while it thrashed away. I got a lot of housework done that summer. Ironically, that Mini never crashed. Not once.

Eventually I got my current Mac Pro, and it was like moving from steam trains to warp drive. All the peripherals and SW moved too, so the only cost was the Mac Pro itself plus the extra HDDs I added at the time.

That Mini then got hooked up the TV where it served up all of our music throughout the house, and movies to the TV for a couple of years. I've upgraded that Mini to a newer one but the first one still works, and I keep it as a spare.

Nah... I just feel sentimental for it. What a workhorse!

Thank You for sharing as that is what I am thinking. I will buy 1333 ram no matter the machine I take home. I saw several refurb minis a few days ago, they were $500 or so.

Even thou it states that "Toshiba doesn't have currently plans to sell the drive outside Japan" doesn't mean that we can't have hope!!;)

this would be the most useless device ever. Think abuot it. bluetooth has a range that would require the iPod to be in the room with your computer. So you don't relaly gain any convienence. And you'll ahve to be there for hours to transfer the songs. bluetooth runs at 1 mbps. usb runs at 11 mbps. so bluetooth is 11 times slower than usb, whcih already takes hours to transfer all the songs, and 400 times sloer then firewire. Meanwhile, you could simply plug it in since you're next to the computer anyway, andhave it all done in minutes.

Bluetooth offers no convienence, is way too slow. Whats the point, there isn't one. Its not like their going to get it streaming music to other devices through bluetooth either. They'd be better off putting in a small radio transmitter of some sort so it can be played through a stereo that way wirelessly. Bluetooth is a technology that has limited applications.

I can't say that I'm at all surprised. First the idea of the subscription based model doesn't really fly when you can have the music with iTunes.

The zune was too little too late, they entered the market just as the iPod was peaking. Now that most of the functionality if in the phones, there is no demand.

Try putting a space between the quote after .jpg and the word "border." (<img src="ACR_updatedmap.jpg"border="0" usemap="#Map">) There should be a space there. I don't know if this will solve the problem, but it may. Safari is usually a lot more forgiving than other browsers about little errors.

Also, to anyone who wants to set up this VPN on a Mac but doesn't have Leopard or above (which EasyVPN requires), you can set this up in Tiger (10.4) using iVPN. It's simple and mostly the same as the guide by the OP, but slightly different. Feel free to reach out to me if you are on Tiger and want help setting it up with iVPN.

    Ah. I see now. :o

I fed this little piece of cruft on another of his threads with a question about a seriously odd statement re: AT&T and data caps.

Had I realized he was an piece of "anti-AT&T" fly-tape ... well, I've no excuse I guess.

I too hear some subtle and intermitent clicking and whirring noises when the room is very quiet at night and I'm just browsing MacRumors :)
I guess it's normal. This is a new PB too, so the hard drive is new as well.

What do you guys think of the new little template I made at the bottom. It's an attempt to let the internet-at-large somehow provide some feedback for the Guides. I realize that the internet-at-large is able to edit the guide directly, but some users may feel daunted by that, when all they really want to do is ask for more information or something.

I'm certain that a random user will need more information that he may not have himself. This simply provides them an easier mechanism to ask.

I'm not a big fan... find it very distracting. Part of it is the look, which is shared by some other templates... feel they are discordant with the rest of the site.

will play around with them when I get a chance. Besides... people can't register and post, they need to register, get 20 posts, then post :) That may be fixed shortly though

    Hi

I'm building a dynamic site for a teacher in PHP, and one part of it lets him edit certain pages (eg, the intro page, class page, etc). Currently, it displays the HTML source in one pane, lets him amend it and then preview his changes in another pane, and he can then save the changes to amend the file.

However, he doesn't want to have to use HTML tags himself. So, what I need to do is create buttons (bold, italic, header, new paragraph, etc) and have him highlight some of the text and click a button to apply the tag. Much like the buttons for this forum.

Does anyone have experience doing that, or, do you know of a free/inexpensive script to help me along with it? I'd imagine the actual tagging would be mostly/wholly done with javascript, and I would then like some way of validating what he's created before it's submitted.

    Many thanks

    Matt

I can add that I checked with a technology instructor who compared her iPhone to mine and noticed that even when she manually put in her schools internet specifications, it still didn't access the internet. It can see the wifi, but when you select that little blue arrow to the right of the network name, there are no settings showing at all. Of course, on her phone, everything shows up. Apparently my phone can see the network but fails to connect.

Do I need to go to the Apple Store and see what the genius's there can tell me?
Or, because it's nearly 2 years old, do I just need to upgrade to a new phone and tell them that this one is defunked?

It's either or... not both simultaneously.

    Ok, thanks.

So: I do believe I can have both Bootcamp and Fusion.. Do they both access the same "Windows" install where I can see my files and stuff? Or is at two separate installs of Windows each only accessible solo?

I hope I can "see" the same Windows 7 via either one. I can use Fusion for quick access and Bootcamp for heavy lifting?

If so, what is the protocol for install?

    Thanks

Either they abuse their phones or are a member of the new generation who think that if a phone is 2 years old, it's on it's "last leg".

I told a friend of mine today who is thinking about buying the iPhone 4 but is worried about all this "outdated technology" talk that if he does and still has the phone 3 or 4 years from now, he'll still have a great phone.

    1. My 3GS is starting to have radio reception issues. I don't pick up the 3G network most of the time now, and I've had to switch back to EDGE only in order to avoid the "Searching..." and "No Service."

It's not inconceivable for phones to have parts that stop working after two years of consistent use.

    2. The iPhone 4 will be outdated tech by this time next year. Apple drops support for older models as they go, either with key features of iOS upgrades or the entire software suite. It'll lack access to LTE, which will mean certain apps will run poorly or not at all, and it'll almost certainly be prevented from running some software that gets designed over the next year for the iPad 2 and new iPhone 4S processor.

But, whatever -- keep giving your friend baseless advice.

Hmmn, have just tried 3 times to buy a PIN through Alltunes...card declined all 3 times, they SAY. Funny but it works everywhere else, including iTMS.

will be checking my bank balance JUST IN CASE!

So, it's NOT better in my experience.

Did you not know they were crooks before you did that?

Can't see it happening anytime soon myself- Apple has a very closed-door policy. FaceTime was pushed a lot by Apple, particularly with the iPhone 4. Allowing FaceTime on PC, Android etc may cannibalise sales.

I have to agree with The Tuck that the many out-of-contract iPhones will need another out, if AT&T doesn't unlock their iPhones. Though expensive, it eliminates the need to jailbreak...
